Origin & Heritage: Known as “Buddha Rice,” it is a traditional variety from the Buddhist period (600 BC) mainly cultivated in the Siddharthnagar and neighboring districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh.
GI Tag: It was granted the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag in 2012, certifying its origin and quality.
Characteristics:
Appearance: Medium-grain with a black husk (hence “Kala Namak”) and white grain.
Aroma: Strongly aromatic, often considered superior to Basmati.
Texture: Soft, easily digestible, and non-sticky.
